Can I Get a Job with an Africana Studies Degree?
Yes, all kinds! Africana Studies majors across the country get jobs as journalists, media relations consultants, psychologists and counselors, social workers, program administrators, state and local government workers, foreign service specialists, high school teachers, university professors, and more.
Highlights
Student Lounge
You will enjoy studying, socializing, and relaxing in a student lounge that is just for Africana Studies students.
Mentoring
We have monthly mentoring sessions where professors call all the majors and minors together to create a community feeling and to answer any questions you may have about school and life.
You will have the opportunity to join our Bigs and Littles Program, where an older major called a Big will partner with you, their Little, and help guide you through the first year or so of your time here at the university. Occasionally, your Big will spoil you by taking for a meal.
Learning Community
Be sure to join the Africana Studies Learning Community called “Sankofa” starting your first semester.
Sankofa is a Ghana word that means “go back and get it.”
With the Learning Community, you will take courses with other majors, receive special attention from professors and guest experts, and live together in our new modern residence life hall.
The Learning Community is also how you will come into the fold of the Africana Studies family. Once your tuition deposit has been paid, your advisor will see you in the system and register you into these Sankofa Learning Community courses.
Opportunities
Paid Internships—After your second year, you will be eligible to apply for paid internships that are just for Africana Studies majors and minors. Two community institutions—M&T Bank and the Charter School of Inquiry—pay Africana Studies students to implement their Africana learning in the real world while you gain valuable work experience that will expand your networks and strengthen your resumes for future employment and graduate studies.
Ghana Study Abroad—In your third and fourth years, you will be eligible to join a faculty-led study abroad trip to Ghana. The study abroad is run by the Africana Studies and Fashion programs and enables students to earn college credit while having their lives transformed through their journeys in this vibrantly friendly and cultured West African country.
